Family Self-Sufficiency is a comprehensive program that is designed to assist families in becoming economically independent through coordinated services in education, job training, job placement, and adult basic skills development. These services can include, but are not limited to: GED, ABE, Vocational Training, College, Life Skills Training, Support Groups and Case Management, and Counseling.

BENEFITS TO YOU & YOUR FAMILY

  • Completion of educational goals

  • Learning new job skills

  • Obtaining a well-paid position

  • A better standard of living

  • Financial and social independence

  • Possible home ownership

  • Cash benefits

When you enroll in the FSS program, you can build savings simply by paying rent. When you obtain a job during or after appropriate education or training or your portion of the rent is increased due to increased income from employment, MCHA will establish an escrow account (savings account in your name).
The family may withdraw the escrow account when it has completed all goals as stated in the Contract of Participation, is employed and has not received Cash Assistance from Welfare for 12 consecutive months.
There are NO restrictions on the use of these funds AFTER your successful completion of the contract. Your escrow may be used to assist in the purchase of a home through MCHA's Homeownership Option program, any other homeownership program, additional education or training or to buy a car.
The designated head of household, for the FSS Program, must participate in and complete whatever education and/or training that is required to obtain employment and begin a career or advance in a career. The plan is flexible but must be completed within 5 years.
